What is Coaching?
According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is defined as "...partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today's uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole."
How is Coaching Different from Therapy?
Coaching focuses on the "What now? What's next?" by starting in the present and moving forward, developing the person to engage life with new behaviors and ultimately to achieve his or her definitions of success. In Coaching, the emphasis is on the present and future. It is solution oriented.
Therapy focuses on the "Why? From Where?" by starting in the past to help a person heal from past issues. Therapy focuses on accompanying feelings and emotions, patterns or behavior and any self-destructive tendencies. In Therapy, the emphasis is on the past and present. It is problem oriented.
How is Recovery Coaching Different from Sponsorship?
Recovery Coaching concentrates on specified goals that relate to the client's own individual growth and personal development. The spiritual principles and steps from the 12 step recovery program are an underlying foundation to this type of coaching, however it is not the focus. It is solution oriented based on what works best for the client.
Sponsorship focuses on the specified 12 steps of the recovery program. The main purpose of the Sponsor is to guide their sponsee through the 12 steps of the recovery program. The clients learn how to work the steps and apply them in all areas of their lives.
